SUMMARYThe soil P sorption capacity has been studied for many years, but little attention has been paid to the rate of this process, which is relevant in the planning of phosphate fertilization. The purpose of this experiment was to assess kinetics of P sorption in 12 representative soil profiles of the State of Paraíba (Brazil), select the best data fitting among four equations and relate these coefficients to the soil properties. Samples of 12 soils with wide diversity of physical, chemical and mineralogical properties were agitated in a horizontal shaker, with 10 mmo L -1 CaCl 2 solution containing 6 and 60 mg L -1 P, for periods of 5, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, 120, 420, 720, 1,020, and 1,440 min. After each shaking period, the P concentration in the equilibrium solution was measured and three equations were fitted based on the Freundlich equation and one based on the Elovich equation, to determine which soil had the highest sorption rate (kinetics) and which soil properties correlated to this rate. The kinetics of P sorption in soils with high maximum P adsorption capacity (MPAC) was fast for 30 min at the lower initial P concentration (6 mg L -1 ). No difference was observed between soils at the higher initial P concentration (60 mg L -1 ). The P adsorption kinetics were positively correlated with clay content, MPAC and the amount of Al extracted with dithionite-citratebicarbonate. In this work the use of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) for cross‐linking of chitosan hydrogel beads was studied at the level of 1 mmol TEOS per gram of chitosan. They were compared with glutaraldehyde and epichlorohydrin cross‐linked beads. The hydrogels were characterized by FTIR, SEM, water content, nitrogen content, and their point of zero charge. The performance of the anionic dye Remazol Black (RB) and the cationic Cd(II) adsorptions was assessed in order to characterize the sorbate–sorbent interaction. Adsorption experimental data were analyzed using two‐ and three‐parameter isotherm models along with the evaluation of mean adsorption energy and standard free energy. The adsorption was observed to be pH dependent. The uptake rate of RB and Cd(II) showed that the three type of beads followed a similar kinetic behavior. For both sorbates the TEOS cross‐linked beads showed the higher maximum adsorption capacity, followed by epichlorohydrin and glutaraldehyde cross‐linked beads. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. The rate of Pb desorption was investigated from clay (Silty clay, Torrifluvent), CaCO3‐rich (Sandy clay, Calciorthid), and sandy (Sandy loam, Quartzipsamment) soils at two different temperatures. Lead has not been released from CaCO3‐rich soils which suggests irreversible Pb sorption by the soil. The desorption was quite hysteretic from sand and clay soils. The total amount of Pb released from the clay soil exceeded that released from the sandy soil. The lower Pb desorption associated with the sandy soil is probably due to its higher calcium carbonate content relative to the clay soil. The kinetics of Pb desorption were evaluated using the Elovich, modified Freundlich, parabolic diffusion, and first order equations. The first order and parabolic diffusion equations adequately described the kinetics of Pb desorption from clay and sandy soils under isothermal conditions. The choice of first order and parabolic equations among others investigated was based on the goodness of fit and the more scientific theoretical assumptions of the equations. The apparent Pb diffusion rate coefficient (Dd) and desorption rate coefficient (kd) values from the clay and sandy soils increased with increasing temperature.
