Behavioural experiments for magnetoreception in eusocial insects in the last decade are reviewed. Ants and bees use the geomagnetic field to orient and navigate in areas around their nests and along migratory paths. Bees show sensitivity to small changes in magnetic fields in conditioning experiments and when exiting the hive. For the first time, the magnetic properties of the nanoparticles found in eusocial insects, obtained by magnetic techniques and electron microscopy, are reviewed. Different magnetic oxide nanoparticles, ranging from superparamagnetic to multi-domain particles, were observed in all body parts, but greater relative concentrations in the abdomens and antennae of honeybees and ants have focused attention on these segments. Theoretical models for how these specific magnetosensory apparatuses function have been proposed. Neuron-rich ant antennae may be the most amenable to discovering a magnetosensor that will greatly assist research into higher order processing of magnetic information. The ferromagnetic hypothesis is believed to apply to eusocial insects, but interest in a light-sensitive mechanism is growing. The diversity of compass mechanisms in animals suggests that multiple compasses may function in insect orientation and navigation. The search for magnetic compasses will continue even after a magnetosensor is discovered in eusocial insects.

Iron (Fe) overload is a complication of the treatment, by chronic transfusion, of a number of genetic diseases associated with inadequate red cell production (anemias) and of other genetic diseases that lead to excessive iron absorption from the diet. Male rats were injected ip with 5 mg/kg body weight ferrous sulfate for 50 days. The animals were injected ip with a-lipoic acid 20 mg per kg body weight for 21 days.Serum iron, Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC), Malonyldialdehyde (MDA), Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, UV-visible absorption spectrum of hemoglobin and osmotic fragility were studied. Results showed significant increase in serum iron, total iron binding capacity, and malonyldialdehyde levels in iron-loaded rats. Treatment with lipoic acid (LA) resulted in decreasing serum iron and TIBC levels by 47%and 29% respectively. At the same time the lipoic acid decreased the level of the MDA in liver, brain and plasma by 54%, 42% and 74% respectively. Also LA diminished the effect of iron-induced free radicals on erythrocyte membrane integrity; it decreased the elevated average osmotic fragility and decreased the elevated rate of hemolysis. Results from UV-visible spectrophotometric measurement of hemoglobin revealed that no oxidative changes of hemoglobin occurred in iron-loaded rats. EPR spectra showed increased in non-heme ferric ions Fe þ3 and free radicals in iron-loaded rats. Whereas the injection of the lipoic acid leads to decreased in such toxic result. This chapter summarizes the applications of Electron Magnetic Resonance (EMR) spectroscopy for characterization of nanoparticle systems. It covers review of reported recent research on EMR characterization of metallic nanoparticles and metal oxyhydroxide/metal oxide nanoparticles which are important for technological as well as biomedical applications. Photo generated charge carriers in nanocrystalline materials as studied by EMR are also included in this review. Efforts have been made to highlight open problems that need further investigations. Basic Features of EMRSpectroscopy may be subdivided in different branches depending on the energy involved [1]. Electron Magnetic Resonance (EMR) spectroscopy basically deals with microwave region of electromagnetic radiation and it is based on the interaction between electronic magnetic moments and magnetic field. Resonance absorption of microwave radiation by unpaired electron spins in a magnetic field is observed in EMR. One studies the direct transitions between electronic Zeeman levels in EMR spectroscopy. Zavoisky discovered EMR in 1945 for study of transition metal ions in salts [2]. EMR spectra are usually characterized by the spin Hamiltonian parameters and therefore rigorous EMR analysis requires quantum mechanical concepts. Theory of EMR and its applications in various disciplines have been discussed in many monographs and review articles. EMR can be used to study the samples with paramagnetic centers which are the sites with unpaired electrons. The various parameters of EMR spectrum, viz. intensity, line width, g value, and hyperfine splitting constant, provide variety of information about the paramagnetic specimen.
