Kinetics and mechanism of sulfite oxidation by permanganate in basic medium

Abstract: The kinetics of the permanganate-sulfite redox reaction has been studied in the alkaline medium using a stopped-flow technique. In the pH range 10 to 12 the reaction was found to obey the rate expression: -;d[MnO,J/dt :-]. Mechanisms for the two paths involving the formation of a (03MnOS03)3-complex prior to the rate-determining step are consistent with the data. 0

“…(12)). The formation of the protonated Mn(V) species is consistent with conclusions concerning the permanganate-sulfite [4] and permanganate-cyanide [6] reactions in basic solution. The assumption of concurrent paths (10, 11) of (O 3 MnOH 2 PO 2 )…”

“…The analysis of absorption spectra obtained in acid solutions shows that the absorption band characteristic for MnO 4 Ϫ ions (450 -650 nm and 275 -350 nm in Fig. 1) disappears during the reaction progress and the absorption in the UV region (200 -250 nm in Fig.…”
