Kinetics and Mechanism of Oxidation of Nicotine by Permanganate Ion in Acid Perchlorate Solutions

Abstract: The kinetics of permanganate oxidation of nicotine alkaloid in aqueous perchlorate solutions at a constant ionic strength of 1.0 mol dm -3 have been investigated spectrophotometrically. The kinetic results showed first-order kinetics in permanganate and fractional-first-order dependence with respect to nicotine concentration. The influence of hydrogen ion concentrations on the reaction rate showed inverse first-order kinetics in [H + ] where the oxidation rates were increased with decreasing hydrogen ion … Show more

“…Similar stoichiometry has been reported for the oxidation of malachite green by permanganate ion [27] and for the oxidation of nicotine by permanganate [28] nicotinic acid [17] and Ltryptophan [24]. Nevertheless in the reaction of permanganate ion with DL-alanine [29] and theobromine [30] one mole of permanganate was consumed by two moles of the reductants respectively.…”

“…This raises concerns about how its application and exclusion from the toxicity of aqueous dye impacts and inhibits light penetration, which disrupts biological function [5,6]. Permanganate ion oxidation occurs through a number of dissimilar pathways and is classified as a multi-equivalent oxidizing agent [7]. Once more, the chemical potassium permanganate was used as an oxidizing agent to clean the water of harmful organic compounds [8] and to analyze the composition of pharmaceutical formulations.…”
