Kinetics and mechanism of oxidation of lactic acid by KMnO4 in H2SO4 medium

Abstract: . Can. J . Chem. 63, 3317 (1985). The initial oxidation stages of lactic acid by acid permanganate were investigated. The rate of the induction period was slow and then gradually increased. The kinetics of oxidation were second order, first order with respect to both lactic acid and Mn(VI1). The reaction was acid catalyzed. Addition of Mn(I1) ions largely increased the rate of the initial stages and decreased the rate of the following stages. The oxidation rate was decreased by the addition of F-or P,o:-ions. … Show more

“…Unfortunately, the latter plot could not be examined with respect to the oxidation of DL-alanine by manganese(II1). Similar reaction mechanisms for the oxidation of some organic substrates by Mn04-have been reported elsewhere (28)(29)(30).…”

“…Sodium pyrophosphate and sodium fluoride have been used as tool to find the involvement of Mn(III), if formed, in the rate-determining step involving manganese redox reactions [18,19]. Therefore, to see the effects of [Na 4 P 2 O 7 ] and [NaF] and to confirm the path of the reduction of Mn(IV) → Mn(II), a series of kinetic runs were carried out in the presence of constant [(MnO 2 ) n ] (= 8.0 × 10 −5 mol dm −3 ) and [ascorbic acid] (= 6.0 × 10 −5 mol dm −3 ) at 40 • C. The values of rate constants, as a function of the complexing agents, are shown graphically (Fig.…”

“…However, the details of lactic acid oxidation by colloidal manganese dioxide are yet unknown although the permanganate/lactic acid reaction has been studied in acidic solutions [10]. The process of the preparation of colloidal manganese dioxide by permanganate/sodium thiosulphate system is not available with sufficient details to describe the reaction under all conditions.…”
