-Glucose production from sugarcane bagasse was investigated. Sugarcane bagasse was pretreated by four different methods: combined acid and alkaline, combined hydrothermal and alkaline, alkaline, and peroxide pretreatment. The raw material and the solid fraction of the pretreated bagasse were characterized according to the composition, SEM, X-ray and FTIR analysis. Glucose production after enzymatic hydrolysis of the pretreated bagasse was also evaluated. All these results were used to develop relationships between these parameters to understand better and improve this process. The results showed that the alkaline pretreatment, using sodium hydroxide, was able to reduce the amount of lignin in the sugarcane bagasse, leading to a better performance in glucose production after the pretreatment process and enzymatic hydrolysis. A good xylose production was also observed.

Hot water extraction (HWE) prior to pulping of wood is a promising method in constructing a platform for traditional pulping or for biorefinery processing. In this study, HWE of aspen wood at a maximum reaction temperature (Treaction) between 140 and 180 ºC was investigated to obtain an optimal extraction condition for wood-derived products. The effect of extraction temperature and reaction time on the extraction performance of the chemical constituents was evaluated, and the degradation and redeposition of lignin and carbohydrates during the HWE process were assessed. Results showed that a minimum Treaction of 160 ºC was necessary for satisfactory carbohydrate removal. The dissolution and readsorption of sugars reached a balance, such that no more sugars in pre-extraction liquor (PEL) were adsorbed on the wood surface under more severe extraction conditions. The reduction of sugars dissolved in PEL should result from the formation of furfural or its derivatives. At the final extraction stage, the dissolved lignin in PEL could redeposit on the exothecium rather than the endothecium of the wood chips.

Birch sawdust was extracted with a pressurized hot water (PHW) flowthrough system. The pH of the extract was controlled during extraction by the addition of acetic acid/sodium acetate buffer. Three different pH levels, 4.0, 4.2, and 4.6, were used. Extraction temperatures were 160, 170, and 180 °C, with a constant 4 mL/min flow rate through the 50 mL extraction vessel. During PHW extraction with plain water, the end pH of the extract dropped from 5 to below 3. Buffers kept the pH of the extracts constant during the first 30 min of extraction. Compared to plain water, the use of buffers resulted in a lower yield of xylans during the 170 °C extraction. However, with the buffered system it was possible to obtain xylans from sawdust with a higher molar mass than plain water extraction. Acetic acid/sodium acetate buffer enabled control of the hydrolysis rate of xylans during extraction.
