Kinetics and Correlation Analysis of Reactivity in the Oxidation of Aromatic Aldehydes by Butyltriphenylphosphonium Dichromate

Abstract: The oxidation of a number of para-, meta- and ortho-substituted benzaldehydes by butyltriphenylphosphonium dichromate (BTPPD), in dimethyl sulphoxide, leads to the formation of the corresponding benzoic acid. The reaction is first-order with respect to BTPPD. Michaelis-Menten type kinetics were observed with respect to the aldehyde. The formation constants of the aldehyde-BTPPD complexes and the rates of their decomposition were determined at different temperatures. The reactions are catalysed by hydrogen ions… Show more

“…A review of the values in Table 2 and 3 indicates that the formation constants, K eq , of the substituted Mandelic acid-EDDC complexes are not very responsive to substitution in the aromatic ring. Similar findings have already been reported in the oxidation processes of various Cr(VI) complexes 18,19 . However, the complex rates of decomposition, k d , vary significantly with the substitution.…”

“…Examination of the values in Tables 3 and 4 shows that the formation constants, K, of the HA-BIDC complexes are not particularly sensitive to substitution in the aromatic ring. Similar observations have been made earlier in the oxidation reactions of other Cr(VI) complexes [25,26]. However, the rates of decomposition of the complexes, k 2 , show considerable variation with the substitution.…”

“…It was observed that the formation constant, K, does not vary appreciably with the hydrogen-ion concentration, however, the rate of decomposition of complex increases linearly. Similar observations have been made in the oxidation of aldehydes 11,12 and oxyacids of phosphorus 13 by butyltriphenylphosphonium dichromate (BTPPD).…”
