Kinetically controlled synthesis of metastable YAlO3 through molecular level design

Abstract: Heterometal alkoxide [YAl(OPr i ) 6 (Pr i OH)] 2 has been used as a molecular template for the controlled and selective synthesis of metastable yttrium aluminate (YAlO 3 , YAP) in nanocrystalline form. The results indicate that the strict control over the Y:Al ratio (1:1) in the precursor suppresses the formation of other Y:Al compositions (Y 3 Al 5 O 12 , YAG and Y 4 Al 2 O 9 , YAM) that are thermodynamically favoured over YAP in the conventional synthesis.

“…Al 2 O 3 powder was used as a reference material to observe the effect of heat treatment on the as-solidified sample. No apparent endothermic or exothermic peaks were detected up to 1673 K. The as-solidified RAlO 3 sample did not show any phase transition, i.e., the formed o-RAlO 3 phase remained even after annealing at 1673 K. This suggests that [47][48][49] However, we did not find any metastable phases in both the as-prepared and annealed samples.…”

“…5 shows FT-IR spectra observed after the annealing at different temperatures. The untreated sample shows an A TR peak at around 655 cm-', which is attributable to a certain vibration of chemical bonds between Al and 0 atoms or between Y and 0 atoms [13,14]. When the sample was annealed at 1200 or 1250 °c, a new ATR peak appears at around 630 cm-', indicating the appearance of a crystal structure different from Y Al03.…”

“…Yttrium–aluminium perovskite (YAG) is a metastable form in the Y 2 O 3 –Al 2 O 3 system, which is formed together with stable oxide phases such as Al‐rich cubic Y 3 Al 5 O 12 (YAG), Y‐rich monoclinic Y 4 Al 2 O 9 (YAM) and a metastable hexagonal phase (YAH) with the same YAP stoichiometry . In conventional methods for material processing of the YAP phase, the cubic and monoclinic forms are thermodynamically favoured and are invariably present along with orthorhombic YAPs.…”
