Kinetic Studies of the Vulcanization of Natural and Synthetic Rubbers

Abstract: The author thanks the Editorial Committee of Rubber Reviews for the honor of reviewing all the work that has been carried out at the Technische Hochschule, Hannover in the field of vulcanization. He welcomes the opportunity to limit the discussion chiefly to our own investigations. Since research on the vulcanization of rubbers is still in full swing and since our own investigations can on no account be considered as finished, it would certainly be premature to make the results of kinetic studies the subject o… Show more

“…The objective of this Section is to provide a review of the reaction mechanisms that have been proposed to describe the chemistry of benzothiazolesulfenamide accelerated systems. We will not attempt a comprehensive discussion of the experimental methods that have been employed to study vulcanization chemistry, since this information has been discussed extensively in a number of excellent review articles [2][3][4][5][6][7] ; rather, we will focus the review on a critical discussion of the reaction mechanisms that have been proposed for accelerated sulfur vulcanization. This Section will be organized around the general reaction scheme shown in Figure 1, where the chemistry is divided into three main processes.…”

“…It is generally agreed that all of the rate of sulfur-sulfenamide reaction and the the sulfenamide must be consumed before the onstability of intermediates influence the delayed set of crosslinking. [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11] The 2-bisbenzothiazoleaction. The formation of 2-(4-morpholinodithio)-2,2-disulfide (MBTS) concentration in the rubber benzothiazole (MDB), which is sufficiently stable increases initially but decreases again prior to to be isolated, was considered to delay crosslinkcrosslinking while 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) ing.…”
