Kinetic Schemes in Open Interacting Systems

Abstract: We discuss utilization of kinetic schemes for description of open interacting systems, focusing on vibrational energy relaxation for an oscillator coupled to a nonequilibirum electronic bath. Standard kinetic equations with constant rate coefficients are obtained under the assumption of time scale separation between the system and bath, with the bath dynamics much faster than that of the system of interest. This assumption may break down in certain limits, and we show that ignoring this may lead to qualitative… Show more

“…The efficiency of electron-hole pair creation processes depends sensitively on the applied bias voltage. 35,36,102 As shown previously, 38,103 cooling due to electron-hole pair creation processes is particularly effective at the onset of resonant transport, but becomes successively blocked for larger voltages. As a consequence, the dissociation rate is significantly reduced with decreasing bias voltage, where pair creation processes become less suppressed.…”

“…46 is zero bias quasiparticle limit of present formulation with focus on incoming flux and neglect of selfconsistency in treatment of light-matter interaction (see Appendix B for details). In the case of quantum treatment of radiation field, the latter assumption is known to violate conservation laws [56,57] and may lead to qualitative failures [58]. Thus, it is not applicable in optical studies of open quantum systems [59].…”
