The gas–liquid vortex reactor (GLVR) has substantial process intensification potential for multiphase processes. Essential in this respect is the micromixing efficiency, which is of great importance in fast reaction systems such as crystallization, polymerization, and synthesis of nanomaterials. By creating a vortex flow and taking advantage of the centrifugal force field, the liquid micromixing process can be intensified in the GLVR. Results show that introducing a liquid into a gas‐only vortex unit results in suppression of primary and secondary gas flow. The Villermaux–Dushman protocol is applied to study the effects of the gas flow rate, liquid flow rate, and liquid viscosity based on a segregation index. Based on the incorporation model and reaction kinetics, the micromixing time of the GLVR is determined to be in the range of 10−4 ~ 10−3 s, which is comparable to the highly efficient rotating packed bed and substantially better than a static mixer.

The numbering-up of zigzag-form microchannels for liquid mixing was experimentally investigated in a multichannel micromixer including 8 parallel channels, based on the Villermaux-Dushman reaction system, with an appropriate sulphuric acid concentration. The results showed that the micromixing performance in such micromixers could reach the same quality as in a single microchannel, when flat constructal distributors with bifurcation configurations were used. The mixing performance did not depend on whether a vertical or horizontal micromixer position was selected. Surprisingly, the channel blockage somewhat increased the micromixing performance in the multichannel micromixer due to the fluid redistribution effect of the constructal distributors. This effect could also be confirmed by CFD simulations. However, the channel blockage resulted in a higher pressure drop and thus higher specific energy dissipation in the multichannel micromixer. The local pressure drop caused by fluid splitting and re-combination in the numbering-up technique could be neglected at low Reynolds numbers, but it became larger with increasing flow rates. The operational zone for the mixing process in multichannel micromixers was sub-divided into two parts according to the specific energy dissipation and the mixing mechanisms.

This work studies how deeply the reagents choice influences micromixing characterisation by the Villermaux-Dushman method, when applying it to a 1 litre stainless steel standard vessel with two baffles, stirred by an inclined blade turbine. For the first time, borate and phosphate buffer are compared on their use in the method. It is observed that triiodide production is higher when borate buffer is used. Moreover, perchloric acid leads to higher triiodide production than sulphuric acid, when injecting the same concentration of both acids. Finally, the influence of the ionic strength is also studied, since there has been a great deal of controversy about it over the last years. The results show that the ionic strength affects triiodide production, although relatively slightly. Advice concerning the choice of the reagents is given in conclusion.
