The role of allo-3«-tetrahydrocortisol (ATHF) as a precursor of 11-hydroxy-and 11-ketoandrosterone was investigated by intravenous administration of 3 H-labeled ATHF to 6 human subjects. The conversion ranged from less than 0.8 to 7.4%. This suggests that ATHF does not contribute significantly to urinary 5a,ll-oxy-17-ketosteroids, and that 11-hydroxyandrosterone may be used to estimate the production of 11/S-hydroxyandrostenedione, either from the quantity of OHA excreted, or, more definitively, from production rate calculations based on the simultaneous injection of labeled cortisol and 11/3-hydroxyandrostenedione.
