In this study, kinetics of biological carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorous removal from a synthetic wastewater in an integrated rotating biological contactoractivated sludge system was investigated. The experimental data obtained from varying four significant independent factors viz., hydraulic retention time, chemical oxygen demand for nitrogen to phosphorus ratio, internal recirculation from aerobic to anoxic zone and disks rotating speed were used for the process kinetic modeling. In order to obtain the bioprocess kinetic coefficients, Monod, firstorder and Stover-Kincannon models were employed. As a result, Monod and Stover-Kincannon models were found to be the appropriate models to describe the bioprocess in the rotating biological contactor-activated sludge system as the determination coefficient for the first-order model obtained less than 0.79. According to the Monod model, growth yield, microbial decay rate, maximum specific biomass growth rate, and half-velocity constant coefficients were found to be 0.712 g VSS/g COD, 0.008/d, 5.54/d and 55 mg COD/L, respectively. From Stover-Kincannon model, the maximum total substrate removal rate constant and half-velocity constant were determined as 15. 2, 10.98, 12.05 g/L d and 14.78, 7.11, 6.97 mg/L for chemical oxygen demand, nitrogen and phosphorus removal, respectively. The kinetic parameters determined in this study can be used to improve the design and operation of the biological contactor-activated sludge system in full scale.

Los sistemas de tratamiento anaerobio con biopelícula son una tecnología consolidada para tratamiento de efluentes industriales. El reactor de lecho fluidizado inverso anaerobio (LFI), empleado en el tratamiento de efluentes de alta carga, utiliza un soporte que proporciona una gran superficie y un bajo requerimiento de energía para la fluidización del lecho. Este trabajo evalúa el desempeño de un LFI, empleando Extendospher ® como soporte y tratando efluentes de la producción de etanol. El reactor arrancó por lotes, posteriormente operó en continuo a diferentes cargas orgánicas volumétricas: 0.5, 1.0, 3.3, 6.8 y 10.4 gDQO/L d. Además, se evaluaron diferentes tiempos de residencia hidráulica (TRH): 10, 5 y 1 días. El sistema alcanzó las siguientes eficiencias promedio de remoción de DQO: 81 % para la operación en lotes, y 58, 67, 59 y 50 % con cargas de 0.5, 1.0, 3.3, 6.8 gDQO/L d respectivamente. Para la carga de 10.4 gDQO/L d, la eficiencia promedio de remoción de DQO fue 38 %, en esta condición el reactor presentó inestabilidad y disminución del rendimiento de metano. La generación de metano inició hasta los 110 días de operación del reactor a una carga de 1.0 gDQO/L d. El sistema alcanzó un rendimiento de metano desde 0.15 hasta 0.34 LCH 4 /gDQO removida . El reactor operando a una carga constante de 6.4 gDQO/L d, y TRH de 1 día, alcanzó una eficiencia promedio de remoción de DQO de 52 %.Key words: effluents of ethanol production, anaerobic digestion, organic load rate, hydraulic retention times ABSTRACThe vinasses are the residual liquid waste after distillation of the ethanol.
