KinesioTaping after botulinum toxin type A for cervical dystonia in adult patients

Abstract: Introduction: Studies explored physiotherapeutic approaches in cervical dystonia (CD) patients with or without botulinum toxin (BoNT) injections, however the results are varying. There are no clinical trials investigating the effects of kinesiology taping in CD patients. The objective of this study is to investigate the efficacy of kinesiology taping as an adjunct to the BoNT injections in patients with CD. Methods: Twenty-five patients were enrolled to the study. Patients were randomly assigned to the experim… Show more

“…To the best of our knowledge, the effect of KinesioTaping on NMSs in patients with focal dystonia has so far been analysed in only one study [13].Our current study is a continuation of our recently published research [14]. Our observations help to elucidate the possible role of combined BoNT-A plus KinesioTaping therapy in the management of NMS in patients with CD.…”

“…In Groups 1 and 2, the BoNT injection was followed by KinesioTaping or ShamTaping respectively, which was performed after seven days and continued for four consecutive weeks, with tapes being changed once per week by an experienced physiotherapist informed about the patient's group allocation as described previously [14].…”

“…Of the 14 included studies, 8 were RCTs [ 24 , 26 32 ], 3 case-control studies [ 25 , 33 , 34 ], and 3 case-series [ 35 – 37 ]. A total of 414 patients with CD participated in the included studies.…”

“…Study participants in the intervention group received various physical therapy interventions modalities such as stretching, exercise therapy (posture, coordination, proprioception, strengthening underactive muscles, motor learning, relaxation, sensorimotor exercises with feedback), aquatic relaxation therapy, home exercise program, active and passive mobilizations of the neck, taping, biofeedback and Transcutaneous Electrical Neural Stimulation (TENS). Twelve out of 14 studies [ 24 28 , 30 , 31 , 33 – 37 ] applied various physical therapy modality interventions whereas 2 studies [ 29 , 32 ] used taping as the sole intervention.…”

“…The Toronto Western Spasmodic Torticollis Rating Scale (TWSTRS), comprising Torticollis severity, Disability, and Pain scales, was used to quantify the severity of CD. The Craniocervical Dystonia Questionnaire was used to assess the quality of life (CDQ4) [57]. However, we need more studies looking into the impact of KT before and after BoNT injection in MMPS.…”
