Kinesiographic study of mandibular movements during functional adaptation to complete dentures

Abstract: After complete denture insertion, edentulous patients usually present transitory difficulties. This is one of the most critical stages of prosthetic treatment and it is strongly related to the prostheses acceptance. The aim of this study was to evaluate potential changes in the mandibular movement pattern related to insertion of the complete denture during the functional adaptation period. The kinesiograph instrument K6-I (Myotronics Research Inc., Seattle, WA) was used to evaluate eight edentulous patients th… Show more

“…The results obtained reinforce the concept that the temporomandibular joint receptors play an important role in controlling mandibular movements and, even if periodontal proprioception is absent, as in the edentulous patients, masticatory dynamics remain unchanged because chewing is a rhythmic activity modulated by a central neural generator (14, 21, 22). It is possible that the masticatory system may work well regardless of the occlusal scheme chosen.…”

“…The sensor array was positioned according to the manufacturer’s instructions and the magnet was attached to the labial midline surface of the mandibular (Scans 1, 3 and 8) or maxillary complete denture (scan 3 – pattern of maxillary complete denture movement during chewing) (13, 14, 16). To study mandible movement during chewing and the pattern of maxillary complete denture movement during chewing, volunteers deliberately chewed a 5 × 10 × 15 mm of bread.…”

“…All CDs were fabricated using the concept of bilateral balanced occlusion . The functional adaptation period was established as 30 days . Denture bases and occlusion were adjusted during this period when necessary, and the experimental procedures began after this period.…”

“…Although the participants were evaluated before the provision of dentures by the faculties, a few of them presented with unsatisfactory new dentures before assessment. In those cases, a period of one month or longer wearing the same pair dentures was considered necessary for adaptation 37,38 and inventories were applied at least three months following the adaptation period and the end of adjustments. This period was respected as the OHIP‐EDENT asks about the perceptions within a period of three months 32 ; thus, the adaptation and adjustment phase would not influence results.…”
