Kinematic Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect with projected fields. II. Prospects, challenges, and comparison with simulations

Abstract: The kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) signal is a powerful probe of the cosmic baryon distribution. The kSZ signal is proportional to the integrated free electron momentum rather than the electron pressure (which sources the thermal SZ signal). Since velocities should be unbiased on large scales, the kSZ signal is an unbiased tracer of the large-scale electron distribution, and thus can be used to detect the "missing baryons" that evade most observational techniques. While most current methods for kSZ extracti… Show more

“…We note that this calculation is the first full estimate in the literature (to our knowledge) of all contributions (i.e., Terms B+C+E) to a secondary-induced CMB lensing auto-power spectrum bias. 15 Note that the residual N (2) and N (3/2) biases discussed earlier will cancel in this procedure, in addition to N (0) and N (1) . …”

“…Measurements of these peculiar velocities can provide further constraints on modified gravity models, the dark energy equation of state, and the sum of neutrino masses (e.g., DeDeo et al 2005;Hernández-Monteagudo et al 2006;Bhattacharya & Kosowsky 2007, 2008Keisler & Schmidt 2013;Mueller Ho et al 2009;Ferraro et al 2016). Thus, it can be used to conduct a baryon census at low redshift and probe whether in fact there are missing baryons (Fukugita et al 1998;Bregman 2007).…”
