“…Furthermore, the outcomes we report are consistent with studies conducted within a similar, unimanual context. The dominant hand presents a shorter movement time and/or a higher velocity on a range of discontinuous unimanual tasks, such as reaching (Bagesteiro et al 2020 ; Mieschke et al 2001 ; Elliot et al 1993 ), line drawing (Vuillermot et al 2009 ), throwing (Sachlikidis and Salter 2007 ; Southard 2006 ) and those of manual dexterity (Temporiti et al 2022 ; Bryden et al 2007 ; Perderson et al 2003 ; Annett et al 1979 ); particularly so when there is an emphasis on accuracy rather speed.…”

“…Raw marker data were sampled at 100 Hz and filtered using a fourth-order low-pass Butterworth filter (cut-off 4 Hz). Subsequently, the following kinematic indexes were computed during the NHPT execution using the procedures and algorithm described by Temporiti and co-workers: total and single phases times (peg-grasp, peg-transfer, peg-in-hole, hand-return), and normalized jerk, mean and peak of velocity during peg-grasp and hand-return phases 51 . These indexes during the NHPT represent valid and reliable parameters for manual dexterity assessment in young healthy subjects.…”

“…Vol:. ( 1234567890 www.nature.com/scientificreports/ Kinematic assessment included the Nine Hole Peg Test (NHPT) and the detection of kinematic indexes during the performance 51 . The NHPT was performed with the participants seated on a height-adjustable chair without back support with the pegboard positioned in front of participants on a 70-cm high table.…”

“…The NHPT has been widely used in different populations, mostly with neurological pathologies such as Parkinson’s disease [ 16 ], multiple sclerosis [ 17 ], and stroke [ 18 ], among others. Validation studies carried out with neurological disease show that this tool presents optimal psychometric properties, with high reliability indices in terms of an interclass correlation coefficient (ICC) between 0.95 and 0.99 [ 15 , 19 , 20 ] and validity analyses correlating NHPT with hand grip and finger pinch. In addition, NHPT has been administered in countries such as the United States in healthy populations of children [ 2 , 21 , 22 ] and adults [ 15 ], proving to be an effective tool for screening manual dexterity in both population types [ 21 , 23 ].…”
