Killing of burkitt-lymphoma-derived daudi cells by ultraviolet-inactivated vaccinia virus

Abstract: Interaction of active and UV-inactivated vaccinia virus at high multiplicity caused cytological changes and inhibition in cellular protein and DNA synthesis, thus arresting the multiplication of Burkitt-lymphoma-derived Daudi cells and eventually killing the cells. Adsorption to the cells but the lack of penetration was evident by immunofluorescence, electron microscopy and [3H]thymidine-labeled virus incorporation. Viral DNA synthesis or virus replication was not demonstrated. Thus, it appears that the massiv… Show more

“…The adsorption of the cytotoxic influenza strain A/Victoria (H3N2) was followed by penetration into the cells. On the other hand, vaccinia virus was effective without penetrating the cells (Grunwald-Beard et al 1991). The activity of RO and B1, which did penetrate the cells, did not contribute to our knowledge regarding the necessity of penetration.…”

“…The surface giycoproteins of egg-grown virus are cleaved, while cleavage in CEF is inefficient. The cleav-stability of the component should also be considered: the toxicity of the RO is more sensitive to UV irradiation than that of influenza and vaccinia viruses (Shlomi and Zakay-Rones 1989;Grunwald Beard et al 1991); formalin, however, abolished the cytotoxicity of the influenza virus altogether. Therefore it is possible that different viruses differ in the onset time of the train of events as well as their extent.…”
