Killian’s is it a True Dehiscence? An Anatomical Perspective

Abstract: Zenker's diverticulum is a pulsion outpouching from the posterior pharyngeal wall. The anatomy of the wall has been proposed to be dehiscent in the region of the Killian's triangle, between the thyropharyngeus muscle (inferior pharyngeal constrictor) and the cricopharyngeus muscle. A dehiscence is a bursting open, splitting or gaping along natural or sutured lines. To the best of our knowledge, there have not been any studies to histologically analyze the posterior pharyngeal wall and the exact location of the… Show more

“…KJD protrudes from the Killian-Jamieson space, an area bounded inferiorly by the cricopharyngeus muscle and laterally by the longitudinal muscle of the esophagus [ 1 ]. This space is distinguished from ZD origination, Killian’s dehiscence (also known as Killian’s triangle), which is bordered superiorly by the inferior pharyngeal constrictor muscle and inferiorly by the cricopharyngeus [ 2 ]. The average size of KJD ranges between 2.8 and 3.8 cm [ 3 ].…”

“… 1 It occurs when the hypopharyngeal mucosa and submucosa herniate into the Killian triangle (the triangle between the transverse fibers of the cricopharyngeal muscle at the bottom and the fibers of the inferior pharyngeal constrictor muscle at the top). 2 Its prevalence rate is 0.01%-0.11%. 3 It is most commonly observed in older men (aged >70 years) and is usually asymptomatic.…”
