Kidney transplants in patients with bladder augmentation: correlation and evolution

Abstract: When a bladder dysfunction is present, it should be treated before KT. In noncompliant bladders, BA is the best treatment. This can be done to try to avoid end stage renal failure or only to prepare the lower urinary tract for reception of the transplant. The presence of a BA did not worsen the evolution of the KT.

“…In a previous study, the patients with low cystometric capacity and low compliance had bladder cycling; however, bladder compliance improved in only 36% of the patients [10]. In other studies, the patients with low detrusor capacity and those with lower urinary tract abnormalities had urinary diversion procedures such as bladder augmentation cystoplasty and ileal conduit before renal transplantation [11][12][13]. The authors who performed urinary diversion procedures previously to the renal transplantation had been claiming that these procedures have the advantage of restoring the lower urinary tract before immunosuppressive therapy and supplies the best possible reservoir for a transplanted kidney.…”
