Kidney sparing giant retroperitoneal liposarcoma: Case report and literature review

Abstract: HighlightsSoft tissue sarcoma accounts for less than 1% of all malignant tumors.Early diagnosis of Retroperitoneal Liposarcoma is extremely difficult due to its location and early onset lack of symptoms.Complete surgical excision remains the mainstay of treatment.Complete resection of invaded organs must be weighed for its recurrence or patient adversity.Retroperitoneal Liposarcoma of well-differentiated subtypes has a good prognosis and low metastatic potential.

“…In a case series of 228 patients undergoing surgery for RLPS, the group of those not requiring multi-organ resection had a higher 10-year survival rate as opposed to those requiring multi-organ resection (35% vs 26%) (49). This suggests that, although invasion to renal parenchyma and the possibility of future recurrence from that site, the choice of performing a nephron-sparing resection must be balanced on the tumor's histologic type, patient's age, and increased morbidity from resection (50).…”

“…1 The histological variants are well-differentiated, dedifferentiated, pleomorphic, myxoid and round cell liposarcomas. 2 The tumours tend to be asymptomatic initially followed by a late presentation when the tumour has outgrown the retroperitoneal space. The most common symptom is abdominal mass or fullness, which is unilateral and progressively increasing.…”

“…3 At a later stage of the disease, patients can present with gastrointestinal or urinary or neurological complaints owing to the compression or invasion of adjacent structures. 2 CECT remains the investigation of choice and allows us to identify the location, extension and the proximity to the neurovascular structures. Image-guided core-needle biopsy via retroperitoneal approach is the gold standard for diagnosis.…”

“…Intra-abdominal soft tissue sarcoma is a rare kind of tumor, which accounts for less 1 % of all malignant tumors. Retropertioneum is the primary site in about 15 % of soft tissue sarcomas [1] , [2] . Of all the kinds, liposarcoma presents the most common type of arising soft tissue sarcomas, taking up about 45 % [3] and about 41 % at lower extremities, and about 11 % chiefly in thighs [4] .…”
