Kidney Injury Molecule-1 (KIM-1): A novel biomarker for human renal proximal tubule injury

Abstract: A soluble form of human KIM-1 can be detected in the urine of patients with ATN and may serve as a useful biomarker for renal proximal tubule injury facilitating the early diagnosis of the disease and serving as a diagnostic discriminator.

“…In the past years, besides NGAL, several AKI and DGF biomarkers have been extensively investigated, including urinary KIM‐1, IL‐18, heat shock protein 72 (uHsp72), L‐FABP, calprotectin, CXCL9, CXCL10, CCL2, IL‐18, cystatin C, T‐cell immunoglobulin, and mucin domain‐3 (Tim‐3), tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 2 (TIMP‐2), insulin‐like growth factor‐binding protein 7 (IGFBP‐7) 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62, 63.…”

“…Herein, we observed that only renal Nlrp3 mediates renal dysfunction on the basis of plasma creatinine levels (Supplemental Figure S1, A and B). We next investigated the renal damage markers KIM-1 22 and NGAL 23 to investigate proximal versus distal damage. Both chimeras showed an expression pattern similar to plasma urea and creatinine with respect to KIM-1 ( Figure 2C) and NGAL ( Figure 2D), confirming that both leukocyte-and renalassociated Nlrp3s are detrimental after renal IR injury and indicating that distinct Nlrp3 expression has no differential effect on proximal versus distal tubular damage.…”

“…The soluble form of KIM-1 can be easily detected in the urine of patients with AKI and can be used as an important biomarker for tubular injury [19]. In a casecontrol study of 40 children undergoing cardiac surgery, including 20 children with AKI (defined as a 50 % increase in SCr) and 20 without AKI, urinary KIM-1 levels were significantly increased, with an area under the time-concentration curve of 0.83 at the 12-h time-point [20].…”
