Key to the soldiers ofAtlantitermesFontes 1979, with a new species from Brazil (Isoptera Termitidae Nasutitermitinae)

Abstract: A soldier-based key for the identification of the species of the neotropical termite genus Atlantitermes Fontes 1979 is presented. The diagnostic characters for the genus are reviewed and discussed, and the upturned nasus is excluded because it is not present in the soldier of every species. A. stercophilus n. sp., from the cerrado vegetation of Minas Gerais, Brazil, is described and illustrated. A. osborni (Emerson 1925) is recorded for the first time in the cerrado vegetation of southeastern Brazil.Drawings … Show more

“…Termites were sorted to morphospecies and named, where possible, after comparison with the collections at the Natural History Museum, London, and descriptions in the available literature (Araujo 1961(Araujo , 1977aConstantino 1990Constantino , 1991aConstantino , b, 1992aConstantino , 1995Constantino & De Souza 1997, Emerson 1925, 1935Emerson & Banks 1957, Fontes 1979, 1981, 1985Fontes & Bandeira 1979, Krishna 1961, 1968Krishna & Araujo 1968, Mathews 1977, Mill 1983. Species/morphospecies diagnosis of members of the taxonomically problematic soil-feeding Apicotermitinae was carried out through dissection and inspection of the guts of worker termites, with special attention paid to the enteric valve.…”

“…However, this division doesn’t align with established subfamilies in taxonomy. Similar to the dataset in Evangelista et al (2019), the search scope was extended to include closely related genera and subfamilies because of shared characteristics among closely related species.…”
