“Key” sectors in final energy consumption: an input–output application to the Spanish case

Abstract: In this paper we analyze the determination of "key" sectors in the final energy consumption. We approach this issue from an input-output perspective and we design a methodology based on the elasticities of the demands of final energy consumption. As an exercise, we apply the proposed methodology to the Spanish economy. The analysis allows us to indicate the greater or lesser relevance of the different sectors in the consumption of final energy, pointing out which sectors deserve greater attention in the Spanis… Show more

“…The advantages of our approach are that only one input-output table and the vector of emissions per activity branch are needed and that an analysis of the structure of final demand (and not only of intersectoral relationships) is carried out. 5 Some authors have applied an input-output approach to analyse Spanish CO 2 emissions in the past (Labandeira and Labeaga, 2002;Alcántara and Padilla, 2003). By identifying those structural coefficients most sensitive to CO 2 emissions and the structural linkages and key CO 2 emissions sectors, this paper provides an alternative approach.…”

“…provide a decomposition of emissions changes by using the algorithms developed byDietzenbacher and Los (1998).5 Tarancón and del Río(2005)is a previous paper following this approach (although not related to CO 2 emissions).6 Labandeira and Labeaga (2002) only take into account energy-related CO 2 emissions. Our approach also differs fromAlcántara and Padilla (2003) since they consider the effect of demand on energy consumption and not strictly on CO 2 emissions.…”

“…While other IO studies analyse energy and CO 2 emissions in Spain, all of them have other approaches (see, e.g. Manresa et al, 1998;Labandeira and Labeaga, 2002;and Alcántara and Padilla, 2003 Table 4 shows the outcome of the SDA for Spain and for the period 1995-2000 using the method proposed by Sun (1998). In order to avoid the influence of price variations when analysing changes over time, IO tables must be expressed in constant prices.…”

“…Bazę tę w badaniach nad identyfikacją sektorów kluczowych (Alcántara, Padilla, 2003, s. 1673) dziesięciu krajów postkomunistycznych Europy Środkowej i Wschod niej wykorzystali Gurgul i Lach (2015). Autorzy badań wykazali, że w okresie 1995-2011 status kluczowych sektorów zachowały sektory związane z produkcją żywności i rolnictwem.…”
