Key issues for long-pulse high-βNoperation with theExperimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak(EAST)

Abstract: In the last few years, long-pulse H-mode plasma discharges (with small edge-localized modes and normalized beta, β N ~ 1) have been realized at the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST). This paper reports on high-β N (>1.5) discharges in the 2015 EAST campaign. The characteristics of these H-mode plasmas have been presented in a database. Analysis of the experimental limit of β N has revealed several main features of typical discharges. Firstly, efficient, stable high heating power is required.… Show more

“…In this paper, we will present the first experimental observation of RSAEs on the EAST tokamak. These modes were occasionally observed in the plasmas for developing long pulse high β N operation [29]. The internal measurement from the interferometer and ECE diagnostics determined the mode location at ρ=0.37-0.46, which is consistent with the position of q min , ρ∼0.4.…”

“…Noticeably, the τ imp in the small ELMy H-mode showing a level close to L-mode discharges is apparently shorter than that in HER H-mode discharges. [13,48,49] With the sufficient central heating and well controlled impurities [50] in this small ELMs regime, a higher β N ∼ 1.7 can be obtained. Generally, in EAST routine discharges with this combined heating regime (P LHW > 1.7 MW and P ECRH > 0.5 MW), small ELMy H-mode with f ELM = 0.5 kHz-1.4 kHz can be accessed.…”
