Ketoprofen 75 mg qid versus Acetaminophen 1000 mg qid for 3 Days on Swelling, Pain, and Other Postoperative Events after Third‐Molar Surgery

Abstract: A randomized, double-blind, within-patient, crossover study was carried out after bilateral "identical" surgical procedures using local anesthesia only. A 3-day tablet regime of racemic ketoprofen 75 mg or acetaminophen 1000 mg qid (x 4) was given starting 3 hours after surgery. Ketoprofen reduced objectively measured swelling 27.8% (p < 0.04) better than acetaminophen 3 days after surgery and 70.8% (p < 0.02) better than acetaminophen 6 days after surgery. The pain intensity (PI) was lower after ketoprofen th… Show more

“…[14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21] NSAIDs and opioid analgesics have a synergic effect, 22 thereby achieving better pain control and an opioid-sparing effect with fewer adverse events in those settings. Therefore, the use of NSAIDs also could be a good strategy for the treatment of VOC in patients with SCD.…”

“…We chose ketoprofen because its efficacy has been proven in many other pain settings. 14,15,17,[19][20][21][51][52][53][54] Since its marketing in 1973 in Europe, ketoprofen, which belongs to the propionic acid class of NSAIDs, has been widely used in France and Europe. It is, like most NSAIDs (eg, ketorolac), a nonselective cyclooxygenase inhibitor.…”

“…5 Other articles using an objective method to measure postoperative facial swelling after third molar surgery have shown paracetamol regimens to be superior to naproxen, and inferior to ketoprofen. 6,7 Paracetamol is not a 'non-NSAID' . It reduces the clinical symptoms of an inflammation quite well with respect to oral surgery.…”

“…There were numerous studies comparing the safety and efficacy of acetaminophen and ibuprofen in the treatment of pain and fever in children [1,[9][10][11]. The analgesic efficacy of ketoprofen vs acetaminophen or their combination has also been evaluated [12][13][14]. However, there are limited amount of studies conducted to compare the antipyretic effectiveness of ketoprofen with acetaminophen in febrile children [3].…”
