Ketanserin in combination with beta‐adrenergic receptor blocking agents in the treatment of essential hypertension.

Abstract: The antihypertensive properties of ketanserin, a 5‐HT2 receptor antagonist, was investigated in combination with beta‐adrenoceptor blockade. Ketanserin was given 40 mg twice daily to 10 hypertensive patients during 4 weeks in a double‐blind placebo‐controlled trial. Ketanserin significantly reduced supine and erect blood pressure compared to double‐blind placebo, while no changes in heart rate were seen. When the blood pressure was assessed during 24 h at steady state conditions, the blood pressure reduction w… Show more

“…The response to ketanserin was similar whether it was used as monotherapy or in addition to bendrofluazide or atenolol. The antihypertensive effect of ketanserin has varied widely in published placebo-controlled studies, ranging from 19/12 mm Hg (Hedner et al, 1984) to 5/4 mm Hg (Waal-Manning et al, 1985) (Table 3). Such variability is to be expected when comparing studies which have included only small numbers of patients.…”

In an observerblind, parallel-group study lasting 6 months we have compared the effects of ketanserin and slow-release nifedipine when added to treatment of hypertensive patients uncontrolled by a thiazide plus P-adrenoceptor blocker.…”
