Keratin 5 expression in squamocellular carcinoma of the head and neck

Abstract: Keratin 5 (K5) is present in the basal layer of a stratified squamous keratinized and non-keratinized epithelium. K5 and K14 have been demonstrated in the mucosa and tumors of the oral cavity, oropharynx, hypopharynx and larynx, and in the mitotic active basal cells of a stratified squamous epithelium. The aim of the present study was to assess K5 expression in squamocellular carcinoma with various localizations in the head and neck. A total of 13 biopsy fragments were included from patients diagnosed with squ… Show more

“…), for LC there are no specific and sensitive markers that can be used for early diagnosis and follow-up, beyond the available prognostic parameters 4 5 . Cell proliferative activity has been extensively investigated in head and neck tumours, including LC, as useful diagnostic and prognostic marker; however, its specific role has yet to be definitively established.…”

“…protein are presented in the cytoskeleton of basal cells, and p63 + Krt5 + basal cells are usually regarded as the stem cells [23][24][25][26]. The balance between the rate of proliferation and differentiation of basal cells is necessary to maintain the normal structure of the epithelium [27].…”
