Keck Planet Imager and Characterizer (KPIC): status update

Abstract: Here we report on the status of the The Keck Planet Imager and Characterizer (KPIC), which is an on-going series of upgrades to the W.M. Keck II adaptive optics system and instrument suite focused on exoplanet imaging and spectroscopic characterization. The KPIC infrared pyramid wavefront sensor and fiber injection unit to highresolution infrared spectrograph NIRSPEC have been assembled, integrated and are under-going tests at the University of Hawaii before installation at the Summit in the Fall of 2018.

“…In conjunction with the Pyramid WFS KPIC includes a new Fiber Injection Unit (FIU) which will be used to feed NIRSPEC to provide high resolution spectroscopy. 11 The Pyramid WFS for KPIC will be in addition to the current Keck WFS, a 20 × 20 visible Shack-Hartmann. Initially the Pyramid WFS will drive the current Keck deformable mirror (DM), but in a second phase a higher order deformable mirror will be added to KPIC to provide higher order correction for the FIU and Pyramid WFS.…”

“…The PWS is closely integrated with the FIU to provide the wavefront sensing. 9 The opto-mechanical design will also support the use of off-axis guide stars using a field steering mirror (FSM) assembly. This is not required for science with the NIRC2 vortex coronagraph or FIU.…”
