Kawasaki syndrome and concurrent Coxsackie virus B3 infection

Abstract: We describe two previously healthy children who were hospitalized in the same period in different departments of our University with clinical signs of Kawasaki syndrome, which were treated with intravenous immunoglobulins and acetylsalicylic acid: in both cases, Coxsackie virus infection was concurrently demonstrated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and complement fixation test identified antibodies to serotype B3. In the acute phase, both patients presented hyperechogenic coronary arteries, but no cardio… Show more

“…Several studies have shown that human bocavirus may play a pathogenic role in the development of KD using direct specimen tests from KD patients 10)15). The association with enterovirus such as coxsackie virus and KD occurrence also has been suggested from several case series 11)16)…”

“…Both of these epidemiologic features suggested that some kind of infection is one of the causes of KD 7). While several researchers have reported diverse organisms as the causative agents of KD,8)9)10)11) a definitive cause has not been identified.…”

“…These are commonly found pathogens. 13 However, the reason why only some patients infected with these viruses develop KD is unknown. A report demonstrated coinfection with Coxsackievirus B3 in a patient with KD.…”

“…Even though the aetiology of Kawasaki disease and other paediatric inflammatory conditions is not yet understood, there is general agreement that stimulating the immune system triggers uncontrolled responses that generate inflammatory diseases. We know that viruses are the most frequently described triggers in Kawasaki disease 5,6 . Cases of Kawasaki disease have been described every year for decades, thousands have life‐long health consequences and a minority die.…”
