Kawasaki disease: role of coronary CT angiography

Abstract: Invasive coronary angiography is considered to be the gold standard for diagnosis and follow-up of coronary artery aneurysms, thrombosis and stenosis in patients with Kawasaki Disease. However, the availability of multi-detector CT coronary angiography provides a viable alternative as a non-invasive imaging modality for sequential follow-up of patients with Kawasaki disease. High quality multidetector CT angiography images of coronary arterial anatomy can be obtained after adequate heart rate control using bet… Show more

“…More widely available are computed tomographic angiography (CTA) and cardiac catheterization, but both are associated with substantial radiation. [59][60][61][62][63] (Fig.4) Coronary artery interventions including angioplasty, stent deployment, and rotational atherectomy [64][65][66][67] and surgical interventions including internal thoracic artery bypass grafting and cardiac transplantation are all procedures that have a role in the management of adult patients who suffered cardiovascular damage from KD in childhood. [68][69][70][71] The optimal management strategies for adult patients after KD are still under study and the cardiovascular outcome for this patient population remains uncertain.…”

“…CT angiography provides a viable alternative as a noninvasive imaging modality for sequential follow-up of patients with KD [40]. Compared with US, CT angiography shows excellent agreement for diameter and length of aneurysms, and it is more sensitive for detecting aneurysms at distal coronary segments and small fusiform aneurysms.…”

“…Although, echocardiography can be used to assess proximal coronary arterial aneurysms, cardiac catheterization with coronary angiography is considered the gold standard [ 2 , 3 ]. However, the recent advances in multi-slice CT technology have made it possible to noninvasively diagnose and sequentially follow up patients with KD who have coronary artery aneurysms [ 4 , 5 ].…”
