Abstract

The purpose of this study is to illustrate the reflections of concept cartoons on students' mathematical symbols, terms, and conceptual uses. As a data collection tool; concept cartoons, field notes held during observations and student diaries were used, and the collected data were analyzed using qualitative data analysis methods. It was determined that students could not use mathematical symbols / terms / concepts adequately before the action plan was implemented. After the application of concept cartoons, students were able to achieve related mathematical achievements and an increase in students' use of Symbol / Term / Concept occurred. In addition, it has been revealed that students actively participate in the process, set up mathematical sentences by taking the words in the course, write the sentences they have established with their own expressions, exchange ideas and research, and improve their mathematical language skills. This means that the applications made with concept cartoons have realized the expected development and change. In the light of the results obtained within the scope of the study, it has been determined that the lessons taught with concept cartoons have contributed to the use of mathematical Symbol / Term / Concept, and suggestions have been made on how concept cartoons can be used in the learning environment and future studies.

An examination of pre-service teachers' knowledge on the concept cartoon: A longitudinal study
