Karyotype analysis of B-Lymphocytes transformed by Epstein-Barr virus in 21 patients with B cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia

Abstract: The karyotypes of 21 patients with chronic B cell leukemia were studied using lymphoblastoid cell lines obtained with the aid of the Epstein-Barr virus. Ten patients had a normal karyotype and eleven patients, an abnormal. There is no single characteristic anomaly, but certain types were more frequent, i.e., 14q+ as a result of a translocation 11;14, trisomy 12, and an isochromosome 17q. Abnormalities in these same three chromosomes have been found in other hematologic malignancies. It is postulated that loci … Show more

“…The most frequent abnormality observed was a 14q + marker chromosome seen in half of the cases studied, with the breakpoint at 14q32. A 14q+ marker has been previously reported in B-CLL (Van den Bergh et al, Autio et al, 1979;Nowell et al, 1981;Vahdati et al, 1983;Gahrton & Robert, 1982;Han et 41, 1984). Other changes in chromosome 14 were also observed in this series, in particular del(l4) (q24) in four patients.…”

“…Deletions and translocations of no. 6 have also been described in CLL (Autio et al, 1979;Schroder et al, 198 1;Gahrton et al, 1980;Vahdati et al, 1983).…”

“…Although these translocations, particularly t(2;7)(p11;q21), have been reported in several cases of splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL), they were unequivocally identified in 12 CLL patients (100)(101)(102)(103)(104). Unfortunately, no data on cell morphology, immunophenotype, or prognosis, are available.…”

“…common to both lymphoid and urogenital neoplasms [4][5][6][7], The only reported aberration in prostate carcinoma cells is an iso-(mono-or dicentric?) chromosome 17 long arm [6], Worthy of note is that the 2 cases of B cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia reported by Vahdati et al [8] with the isochromosome 17q (long arm) in their cell lines underwent a prostatectomy at that time.…”
