Karyomorphological study of five Turkish endemicRhaponticoidesVaill. (Asteraceae, Cardueae) species

Abstract: In this paper, we aimed to determine the chromosomal features of Turkish endemic Rhaponticoides species. The chromosome numbers and karyomorphology of five species were examined. The chromosomal counts confirmed the previous reports of 2n = 30 given for Rhaponticoides species growing in different countries. Although R. iconiensis had a karyotype formula of 28m + 2sm, the remaining four species all had 26m + 4sm. Rhaponticoides aytachii and R. hierroi were especially similar in asymmetry indices. Rhaponticoides… Show more

“…Despite its biogeographic interest 42 , we lack a time-calibrated biogeographical study to shed light on the processes underlying the current distribution of the genus and reveal its ancestral area as well as its migration routes and speciation events across the Mediterranean basin. Similarly, a comprehensive phylogenetic study based on molecular data of the genus might support or refute the latest taxonomical proposal 41 as well as previous morphological, palynological, and karyological studies 39,40,[43][44][45][46] .…”

“…As for the south route (route 2 in Fig. 4 ), the Mediterranean line integrates a series of species of narrow distribution, many of them from the Mediterranean part of Anatolia 41 , 46 extending westwards to North Africa and the Iberian Peninsula (Fig. 4 ).…”
