Kartagener's syndrome associated with infundibular pulmonic stenosis, chronic renal failure and azoospermia : A report of a case.

Abstract: Wedescribe here a case of a manwith Kartagener's syndrome, whose parents were cousins each other, associated with infundibular pulmonic stenosis, chronic renal failure and azoospermia. These combined abnormalities have not been previously reported in one patient with Kartagener's syndrome, as far as English literatures are concerned.

“…17 Inhaled bronchodilators, mucolytic, and chest physiotherapy are used to treat bronchiectasis/lower respiratory tract infections. 18,19 A role for inhaled or oral corticosteroids and recombinant DNA is anecdotal. 20 Pneumococcal and H influenza vaccination is preferred and advised to decrease both the severity and frequency of infections.…”

“…A spectrum of renal abnormalities, including several glomerular injuries as well as polycystic kidney disease, has been anecdotally shown in patients with the disease 4–7,9. Even patients with end-stage renal failure have been described 10,11. At present, whether or not KS and/or PCD has a pathogenic role in kidney disorders, and the chronic recurrent respiratory tract infections seen in this syndrome or medications for a comorbidity may be associated with certain types of glomerulopathy 5,9.…”

“…A MEDLINE literature search found a single report of Kartagener syndrome associated with mesangiocapillary glomerulonephritis, 7 the authors of which speculated that chronic recurrent infections, which occur in Kartagener syndrome, might be a factor in the development of glomerulonephritis. Cases of chronic renal failure with Kartagener syndrome, speculated to be caused by chronic glomerulonephritis arising from recurrent infections or disturbed TGFb (a cytokine with an important role in inflammation and fibrogenesis) activity, 5,8 have also been reported earlier, although renal biopsy was not done. 8 Mesangioproliferative glomerulonephritis has been reported to occur after repeated infections.…”
