Karst and conservation research in Indonesia and its implication to education

Abstract: Indonesia hosts a vast area of karst landscapes that expand from the island of Sumatra to Papua. Along with the implementation of the World Heritage List and Global Geopark Network, karst environment has become essential topics in Indonesia. By using SCOPUS and Google Scholar database, this paper examined trends of karst research in Indonesia. The result showed that karst related publications have shown to be increasing from 1994 to 2010, and grow more massively after 2010. Also, the publications can be classi… Show more

“…17 of 2012 issued by the Indonesian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, karst landscapes are areas formed by dissolved water in limestone or dolomite. Karst is a physical landscape typified by broad plateaus, steep hills, sunken valleys, and pointed carbonate rock peaks (Sulistiyowati et al 2021). Due to the unique characteristics of the karst region, this area is home to an abundance of plant and animal species (Mane et al 2019).…”

“…The strong relationship between physical and non-physical development can be seen from the impact of weak physical development on the even distribution of the population in Papua (Butler et al, 2021;Suparmi et al, 2018). There are some areas that are difficult to reach and have a lower population (in terms of number, capacity, to health) than areas that are more developed, this is due to the difficulty of accessing some of these areas (Apriliana et al, 2022;Pradana et al, 2019;Sulistiyowati et al, 2021;Wijayanto et al, 2019). The Direction of Papua Development: Is A New Autonomous Region the Answer?…”

“…Asian karst ecosystem (Furey et al 2010) with its caves has been identified as one of four regional priorities for bat conservation research (Kingston 2008). Indonesia has a vast karst area, indicating a great potential for karst biodiversity (Sulistiyowati et al 2021). In contrast, West Java is a region that has a vast karst ecosystem with biodiversity potential (Putri et al 2017).…”
