Kaposi sarcoma incidence in the Swiss HIV Cohort Study before and after highly active antiretroviral therapy

Abstract: Between 1984 and 2006, 12 959 people with HIV/AIDS (PWHA) in the Swiss HIV Cohort Study contributed a total of 73 412 person-years (py) of follow-up, 35 551 of which derived from PWHA treated with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Five hundred and ninety-seven incident Kaposi sarcoma (KS) cases were identified of whom 52 were among HAART users. Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI). Kaposi sarcoma incidence fell abruptly in 1996 -1998… Show more

“…The finding that cART had little effect on HL is another clear difference with respect to KS 30 and NHL. 27 Equally, a history of AIDS diagnosis, which has often been used as proxy of immunodeficiency, did not significantly predict HL risk, as also shown previously.…”

“…Compared to its prevalence in the 1980s and early 1990s, the rate of Kaposi's sarcoma was relatively low (19). Among the HIV-infected patients, MSM were the most affected by Kaposi's sarcoma.…”

“…For example, in HIV, Kaposi sarcoma risk is strongly inversely associated with CD4 ϩ T-cell count. 41,42 In CVID, however, only a small subset (Ͻ 10%) of patients appear to have very low CD4 counts. 43 A final possibility is that Ig-replacement therapy, used in 71% of the cohort, 15 is associated with a reduced risk of cancer in PID.…”
