Kaposi's sarcoma in HIV-negative men having sex with men

Abstract: Kaposi's sarcoma may develop in homosexual or bisexual men without HIV infection. This type of Kaposi's sarcoma has clinical features in common with classical Kaposi's sarcoma but occurs in younger patients. Its prognosis is good, as Kaposi's sarcoma is generally limited, but clinicians should be aware of the association with lymphoproliferative diseases, which may affect prognosis.

“…Diabetes mellitus was also strongly associated with increased risk of cKS in the current study and has been noted among KS patients previously[Weissmann, Linn, Weltfriend, and Friedman-Birnbaum, 2000;Lanternier, Lebbe, Schartz, Farhi, Marcelin, Kerob, Agbalika, Verola, Gorin, Janier, Avril, and Dupin, 2008;Guttman-Yassky, Dubnov, Kra-Oz, Friedman-Birnbaum, Silbermann, Barchana, Bergman, and Sarid, 2006] [add recent Lanternier paper on HIV-neg gay men in AIDS]. Guttman-Yassky et al suggested a relation between diabetes mellitus and cKS in a case-control study in Israel, although the association was not significant (OR 1.8, 95% CI 0.4-7.4) [Guttman-Yassky, Dubnov, Kra-Oz, Friedman-Birnbaum, Silbermann, Barchana, Bergman, and Sarid, 2006].…”

“…8 Finally, one French trial describes the use of different forms of treatment for KS in 28 HIV-negative MSM, including imiquimod for one patient. 9 Complete resolution occurred after a median of 28 weeks (range 12 -52 weeks) in five of 11 patients after a median of 22 weeks of treatment (range 12-52). One possible reason for the slower reported responses than we saw in our patient is the thickness of the skin in other sites compared with the genital skin in our case.…”
