The aim of the work was to identify predictors, descriptors and components of emotional burnout (EB) in psychiatrists during the war, to understand the interrelationships between them as a basis for building therapeutic approaches to the prevention and elimination of EB manifestations in this contingent. Contingent and research methods. The study sample, which was formed in compliance with the principles of biomedical ethics and based on informed consent, consisted of 120 psychiatrists who worked in the city of Kyiv in the period from February 24, 2022, during 2022. The criterion for stratification of the examined into groups was the presence and severity manifestations of professional maladjustment (PM) in psychiatrists, which reflected the level of their EB. According to the obtained results, the examinees were divided into three groups: the first group, OG1 – 30.8% (37 people) – doctors without signs of PM, and a low level of EB; the second group, OG2 – 47.5% (57 people) – persons with signs of PM, and a moderate level of EB; the third group, OG3 – 21.7% (26 people) – respondents with clinically defined and pronounced PM, and a high level of EB. Clinical-psychopathological, psychometric and psychodiagnostic research methods were used to assess the state of the parameters that make up the components of EB. Statistical analysis of the obtained results was performed using the non-parametric Mann-Whitney test (determination of differences) and the method of Spearman's rank correlations (estimation of correlations). The results. In the genesis of the development and progression of EB in psychiatrists during the war, the personal, psychopathological, psychosocial, professional and emotional-interpersonal indicators of their life activities are involved.

Burnout and emotional exhaustion in frontline healthcare workers and their implications for the health of patients, individual clinicians, and organizations are increasingly described among various healthcare settings. Yet therapeutic strategies to address burnout and other work-related conditions are outpaced by innumerable descriptions of burnout prevalence across healthcare disciplines. This review provides a framework that should be helpful in beginning the process of addressing burnout and its related conditions. It begins with an elucidation of key inter-related concepts of work-related conditions that should be considered in the differential diagnosis along with other mental health conditions that are concomitantly elevated in healthcare clinicians (eg, depression and substance abuse) but require a different approach to treatment. Factors that lead to increased resilience, engagement, and thriving in clinical workplaces are considered. While strategies are dichotomized between organizational level interventions and individual or personal interventions to address burnout, the idea of identifying and addressing root causes of burnout and related conditions is highlighted. The efficacy and feasibility of interventions that incorporate mindfulness-based stress reduction, cognitive behavioral strategies, meaning-centered therapy, and compassion training are highlighted as interventions with proven efficacy and durability that should be considered based on work-related stressors and appeal to clinicians.

An Exploration of Transcultural Othering in the Print Media: Asian Communities During COVID-19 in Canada and the US

This thesis explores the transcultural othering of Asian communities in the Canadian and American print media during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using content analysis, I analyzed 226 magazine articles published by Maclean's and Newsweek between February 1st, 2020 and April 30th, 2021. My analysis found 17 othering mechanisms were used against Asian communities. China was the most frequently discussed country within the data and contributed to a negative portrayal of Asians overall. Political articles were identified as the primary source of exclusionary othering towards Asians, whereas articles on COVID-19 were mostly inclusionary. This thesis contributes to the extant literature by further theorizing how and where transcultural othering occurs. It challenges established notions of the mainstream media scapegoating illnesses on transcultural communities during pandemics as a predominant source of exclusionary othering during COVID-19 and suggests that the print media's political coverage was a greater source of exclusion. Implications and limitations are discussed.
