'Kangaroo mother care' to prevent neonatal deaths due to preterm birth complications

Abstract: Background ‘Kangaroo mother care’ (KMC) includes thermal care through continuous skin-to-skin contact, support for exclusive breastfeeding or other appropriate feeding, and early recognition/response to illness. Whilst increasingly accepted in both high- and low-income countries, a Cochrane review (2003) did not find evidence of KMC’s mortality benefit, and did not report neonatal-specific data. Objectives The objectives of this study were to review the evidence, and estimate the effect of KMC on neonatal morta… Show more

“…Emphasizing the benefits of breastfeeding for mother and child, as well as the correct grasp, identifying difficulties and problems in the breasts, pain or cracking, giving advice on supplying milk in a cup and not offering a bottle or other artificial nipples were suggested. The importance of the maternity's Human Milk Bank support services and the participation of mothers in the MC in the promotion of breastfeeding, as corroborated the literature was highlighted (19 Despite the municipality studied having a public maternity, reference to the MC, there is not yes an interface with AB to perform step three of MC. The Precious Baby Program needs to be strengthen strategies to materialize MC in AB, despite its positive results in relation to the risk babies' follow-up.…”

“…A meta-analysis performed, contemplating the period from 1970 to 2009, included 15 randomized trials with 524 smaller preterm infants of 2000g, showing that the MC is highly effective in reducing severe morbidity, particularly from infections, and significantly reduces neonatal mortality in this range (19). The systematic review involved 2,751 newborns weighing less than 2300g, and also included 18 clinical trials.…”

“…A recent meta-analysis showed that SSC in conjunction with breastfeeding and recognition of danger signs substantially reduced neonatal mortality in hospital-born preterm babies (birth weight <2000 g) in hospital, and was highly effective in reducing severe morbidity, particularly from infection. 59 A study from Western India, in which 36.9% of hospitalized newborns were hypothermic, reported a decrease in this rate to 3.9% with kangaroo mother care. 60 However, in many countries there is resistance from health professionals, mothers and families related to local cultural practices.…”

“…A metaanalysis of 988 infants enrolled in 3 randomized controlled trials of continuous KMC begun in the first postnatal week in low-or middleincome countries found a 51% reduction in mortality among infants with a birth weight ,2000 g (relative risk: 0.49 [95% confidence interval: 0.29-0.82]). 1 Although the methods of this review have come under question, 2 a Cochrane meta-analysis of 18 trials of continuous KMC begun before postnatal day 10 in infants with a birth weight ,2500 g also showed significantly reduced mortality and morbidity at discharge or 40…”
