We present a holographic construction of solutions to the gravitational wave equation starting from QFT scattering amplitudes. The construction amounts to a change of basis from momentum to (2, 2) twistor space, together with a recently introduced analytic continuation between (2, 2) and (1, 3) spacetimes. We test the transform for three and four-point amplitudes in a classical limit, recovering both stationary and dynamical solutions in GR as parametrized by their tower of multipole moments, including the Kerr black hole. As a corollary, this provides a link between the Kerr-Schild classical double copy and the QFT double copy.

We formulate a new program to generalize the double-copy of tree amplitudes. The approach exploits the link between the identity element of the “KLT algebra” and the KLT kernel, and we demonstrate how this leads to a set of KLT bootstrap equations that the double-copy kernel has to satisfy in addition to locality constraints. We solve the KLT bootstrap equations perturbatively to find the most general higher-derivative corrections to the 4- and 5-point field theory KLT kernel. The new kernel generalizes the string KLT kernel and its associated monodromy relations. It admits new color-structures in the effective theories it double-copies. It provides distinct generalized KK and BCJ relations for the left and right single-color theories and is in that sense a ‘heterotic’-type double-copy. We illustrate the generalized double-copy in detail for 4d Yang-Mills theory with higher-derivative corrections that produce dilaton-axion-gravity with local operators up order ∇10R4. Finally, we initiate a search for new double-copy kernels.

Scattering amplitudes of Kaluza-Klein strings and extended massive double-copy

We study the scattering amplitudes of massive Kaluza-Klein (KK) states of open and closed bosonic strings under toroidal compactification. We analyze the structure of vertex operators for the KK strings and derive an extended massive KLT-like relation which connects the N-point KK closed-string amplitude to the products of two KK open-string amplitudes at tree level. Taking the low energy field-theory limit of vanishing Regge slope, we derive double-copy construction formula of the N-point massive KK graviton amplitude from the sum of proper products of the corresponding KK gauge boson amplitudes. Then, using the string-based massive double-copy formula, we derive the exact tree-level four-point KK gauge boson amplitudes and KK graviton amplitudes, which fully agree with those given by the KK field-theory calculations. With these, we give an explicit prescription on constructing the exact four-point KK graviton amplitudes from the sum of proper products of the corresponding color-ordered KK gauge boson amplitudes. We further analyze the string-based double-copy construction of five-point and six-point scattering amplitudes of massive KK gauge bosons and KK gravitons.
