Kalman Filter Channel Estimation in 2 × 2 and 4 × 4 STBC MIMO-OFDM Systems

Abstract: Channel estimation is a challenging problem for space time block coding (STBC) multipleinput and multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems in dynamic environments. To handle this problem and improve the system performance, this paper proposes a Kalman filter (KF) based channel estimation method applied to 2 × 2 and 4 × 4 STBC MIMO-OFDM systems. The proposed method based on the dynamic tracking property of KF is well adopted for dynamic channel estimation. First, a new ortho… Show more

“…The quasi-static channel is assumed, and the parameters used in this section are summarized in Table 1 . We perform tests in China digital television test 1st (CDT 1) and CDT 6 35 channels, respectively. These channels are all Rayleigh channels with the taps number of 6, whose power delay profiles are shown in Table 2 .…”

“…It provides two effects: i) frequency selective fading and ii) intersymbol interference (ISI). Frequency-selective fading can be overcome mostly by observed "uniformity" of a narrow-band channel [29], [30]. On the other hand, the symbols modulation at a very low rate enables the symbols to be significantly longer than the channel response, minimizing the interference.…”

“…More specifically, in MIMO system, the STBC scheme allowed multiple copies of the same data stream to be transmitted using a number of transmitter antennas, which resulted in an improved data transfer reliability [6]. Therefore, the spatial and temporal variety gained from using STBC in MIMO-OFDM system will lead to high-rate packet transmission without losing bandwidth, appropriate for high throughput application [7].…”
