K3B6O10Cl: A New Structure Analogous to Perovskite with a Large Second Harmonic Generation Response and Deep UV Absorption Edge

Abstract: Introduction of the Cl(-) anion in the borate systems generates a new perovskite-like phase, K(3)B(6)O(10)Cl, which exhibits a large second harmonic response, about four times that of KH(2)PO(4) (KDP), and is transparent from the deep UV (180 nm) to middle-IR region. K(3)B(6)O(10)Cl crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric and rhombohedral space group R3m. The structure consists of the A-site hexaborate [B(6)O(10)] groups and the BX(3) Cl-centered octahedral [ClK(6)] groups linked together through vertices to fo… Show more

“…Thus, finding the optimal composition that is facile to synthesize, yields large single crystals, and simultaneously satisfies the NLO requirements has attracted considerable attention. [10,11] The presence of large NLO coefficients in a structure is usually in contradiction with wide band gaps in one compound. For instance, the structural units in the known compounds are second-order Jahn-Teller (SOJT) polar dis- [17] which combine with diverse other functional building units to produce materials with large NLO coefficients, for example, Cd 4 BiO-(BO 3 ) 3 (6 KDP), [18] Pb 2 B 5 O 9 I (13.5 KDP), [19] and Ba 23 Ga 8 Sb 2 S 38 (22 AgGaS 2 ).…”

“…Materials processing commercial application for the generation of coherent light in ultraviolet region have been found in b-BaB 2 O 4 (BBO) [4], LiB 3 O 5 (LBO) [5], and also some potential candidates such as KBe 2 BO 3 F 2 (KBBF) [6], K 3 B 6 O 10 Cl [7], Ba 4 B 11 O 20 F [8], Li 4 Sr(BO 3 ) 2 [9]. Recently, some copper or gallium borates also attract considerable interest owing to their ability to catalyze water splitting under visible-light excitation [10].…”
