JWST mirror and actuator performance at cryo-vacuum

Abstract: The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) telescope's Secondary Mirror Assembly (SMA) and eighteen Primary Mirror Segment Assemblies (PMSAs) are each actively controlled in rigid body position via six hexapod actuators. Each of the PMSAs additionally has a radius of curvature actuator. The mirrors are stowed to the mirror support structure to survive the launch environment and then must be deployed 12.5 mm to reach the nominally deployed position before the Wavefront Sensing & Control (WFSC) alignment and phasing … Show more

“…Finally, we obtained the output of the flexible legs as d 1 = R 1 (a 1 )a 1 , d 2 = R 2 (a 2 )a 2 , d 3 = R 3 (a 3 )a 3 by substituting the identified amplification ratio function. Then, the relationship between the actuators and the sensors can be rewritten as Equation (9). Additionally, the matrix relationship between the input of the actuator and the output of the sensors is shown in Figure 8.…”

“…There are seven low-temperature actuators, customized by Ball Aerospace, behind each mirror. Each actuator has a coarse and fine two-stage adjustment system, and the actuator is connected to the mirror and support mechanism through a kind of flexible structure [9,10]. The co-phase adjustment of most ground-or space-based telescopes depends on the positioning mechanism behind the mirror.…”

“…While there are flight contingency procedures for recalibrating the FSC of any of Webb's 132 mirror actuators on-orbit, the processes are time consuming (i.e., on the order of days) and would reduce the time Webb could spend accomplishing its science mission. As a risk reduction exercise, measurements of the FSC errors in each actuator were made during OTE functional testing 6 during the various ground test campaigns in the fully integrated OTIS configuration over the last two years. The following sections describe these tests and their results.…”
