JWST MIRI/MRS in-flight absolute flux calibration and tailored fringe correction for unresolved sources

Abstract: Context. The Medium Resolution Spectrometer (MRS) is one of the four observing modes of JWST/MIRI. Using JWST in-flight data of unresolved (point) sources, we can derive the MRS absolute spectral response function (ASRF) starting from raw data. Spectral fringing, caused by coherent reflections inside the detector arrays, plays a critical role in the derivation and interpretation of the MRS ASRF. The fringe corrections implemented in the current pipeline are not optimal for non-extended sources, and a high dens… Show more

“…A massive flow of icy pebbles across the snowline, followed by vertical turbulent mixing, may enhance the abundance of water in gas at temperatures below ∼300 K by orders of magnitude above the low abundances predicted by static chemical models. Recently, JWST has begun confirming the Spitzer observations of molecular emission throughout the midinfrared (Banzatti et al 2023b), and the initial results indeed suggest a wide diversity in relative molecular abundances (Gasman et al 2023b;Grant et al 2023;Tabone et al 2023).…”

“…We applied an aperture correction for an extraction radius of 1.5 times the PSF FWHM derived in Argyriou et al (2023) to the extracted spectra. We also applied a correction to the 1D spectrum, as described in Gasman et al (2023), for the spectral leak at 12.2 μm.…”

“…In this channel the FOV measures 6 6 × 7 7 corresponding to a physical scale of 306 × 357 pc 2 at the distance of Sombrero. Note that the integrated spectrum is not shown at the longest wavelengths due to sky subtraction issues as discussed in Gasman et al (2023).…”
