Juxtaglomerular cell tumor of the kidney: a case report

Abstract: We report a case of renin-secreting juxtaglomerular cell tumor which developed in a hypertensive 47-yr-old Korean man. Presumptive clinical diagnosis was made before surgery based on the high level of plasma renin and the radiologic evidence of renal mass. Grossly, a round, bulging, well-encapsulated mass of 3 x 3 cm was located in the mid-portion of the right kidney. On microscopic examination, the tumor was composed of ovoid to polyhedral cells with bland nuclei, indistinct nucleoli and light eosinophilic cy… Show more

“…Most of the cases of reninoma have only been diagnosed postoperatively and most lesions were cured by nephrectomy [4,5]. Histologic diagnosis of reninoma is usually confirmed by positive immunostain of renin or electron microscopic identification of renin granules [3]. All reported cases were benign with no recurrence or metastasis.…”

“…Renin producing tumors include renal tumors (e.g., reninoma, Wilms' tumor, clear cell type of renal cell carcinoma, oncocytoma and mesoblastic nephroma) and extrarenal tumors (e.g., granulosa cell tumor, lung cancer and pancreatic cancer) [3]. Most of the cases of reninoma have only been diagnosed postoperatively and most lesions were cured by nephrectomy [4,5].…”

“…JCT of the kidney is a rare and benign renal neoplasm. An epidemiological study revealed that these tumors generally occur in relatively young patients with a mean age of 27 years, predominantly women (male to female ratio, 1:2) [3] , [7] . The clinical presentations of JCT include marked hypertension, hyperaldosteronism, and hypokalemia secondary to renin secretion by the tumor.…”

“…Juxtaglomerular cell tumor (JCT) of the kidney, also called reninoma, is a rare benign renal neoplasm that was first described by Robertson et al [1] in 1967. To date, approximately 110 patients with JCT of the kidney have been reported in the English-language literature [2] , [3] , [4] , [5] , [6] , [7] . These patients typically present with high blood pressure, usually associated with hypokalemia and hyperaldosteronism secondary to renin hyperproduction by the tumor.…”
