Organisms can behaviorally, physiologically, and morphologically adjust to environmental variation via integrative hormonal mechanisms, ultimately allowing animals to cope with environmental change. The stress response to environmental and social changes commonly promotes survival at the expense of reproduction. However, despite climate change impacts on population declines and diversity loss, few studies have attributed hormonal stress responses, or their regulatory effects, to climate change in the wild. Here, we report hormonal and fitness responses of individual wild fish to a recent large-scale sea warming event that caused widespread bleaching on coral reefs. This 14-month monitoring study shows a strong correlation between anemone bleaching (zooxanthellae loss), anemonefish stress response, and reproductive hormones that decreased fecundity by 73%. These findings suggest that hormone stress responses play a crucial role in changes to population demography following climate change and plasticity in hormonal responsiveness may be a key mechanism enabling individual acclimation to climate change.

Here we report on a previously undocumented facultative symbiosis involving the wrasses Labroides dimidiatus and Thallasoma amblycephalum living in association with two species of sea anemones, on coral reefs in the north-western Pacific. By SCUBA diving we observed juvenile L. dimidiatus occurring in Entacmaea quadricolor (solitary type) cleaning the anemonefish Amphiprion frenatus and in Heteractis magnifica cleaning the anemonefish Dascyllus trimaculatus. Thallasoma amblycephalum co-existed in H. magnifica with the anemonefish D. trimaculatus, A. ocellaris and L. dimidiatus.

Anemon laut merupakan salah satu jenis hewan dari filum Cnidaria. Mereka dapat dibudidayakan dan diperbanyak secara vegtatif dengan metode fragmentasi. Fragmentasi adalah sistem reproduksi secara aseksual dengan cara pembelahan bagian tubuh sehingga membentuk individu baru yang berasal dari satu individu sehingga mempercepat proses reproduksi. Namun cara fragmentasi ini sering menemui kendala, yaitu rendahnya tingkat kelangsungan hidup (survival rate), serta performa morfologis yang mengalami pemutihan. Hal ini disebabkan karena adanya gangguan dari algae berfilamen serta ketidakmampuan anemon beradaptasi pada kondisi lingkungan buatan. Penelitian bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh cahaya terhadap kelangsungan hidup dan tampilan morfologis anemon pasir (Heteractis malu). Percobaan yang digunakan adalah Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) yang terdiri atas 3 perlakuan, dan masing-masing perlakuan diulang sebanyak 4 kali. Hasil penelitian memperlihatkan bahwa keberadaan cahaya sangat mempengaruhi kehidupan anemon. Namun demkian, intensitas cahaya tidak berpengaruh signifikan terhadap tampilan morfologis anemon. Ketiadaan cahaya akan membuat tampilan morfologis anemon (warna tubuh) semakin pucat. Cahaya berpengaruh signifikan terhadap tingkat kelangsungan hidup anemon pasir (H. malu). Kondisi yang gelap tanpa cahaya akan menurunkan tingkat kelangsungan hidup anemon.
