Underground coal mining of gas-bearing coal seams is accompanied by the emission of large amounts of methane, which increases with depth. Coal seam methane is not only a major cause of major accidents in coal mines, but is also a greenhouse gas that has a significant negative impact on the Earth’s atmosphere. Analysis of the efficiency of underground coal mining suggests that as the depth of mining increases, the productivity of a longwall decreases by a factor of 3–5 or more, while the specific volume of methane emitted increases manifold and the efficiency of methane management decreases. Effective management of coal seam methane can only be achieved by monitoring its content at key points in a system of workings. Monitoring of methane not only eliminates the risk of explosions, but also lets us assess the effectiveness of using methane management techniques and their parameters to improve efficiency and reduce the cost of methane management (including a methane drainage) for ensuring sustainable underground coal mining. The aim of this article is to develop a software and hardware complex for monitoring methane in a coal mine by creating a simulation model for monitoring methane. The Arduino Uno board and the methane sensor MQ-4 were used for this purpose. In this article, the causes of methane emissions in coal mines, gas control systems, the structure of the mine monitoring system, and the causes of risks and occurrence of accidents in coal mines are considered. As a result of the work, the mathematical model of the methane measurement sensor was developed; the Arduino Uno board developed a simulation system for methane monitoring; and the numerical results of the research are presented in the graphs.

Coal–rock disasters are becoming more and more severe as the intensity of coal mining increases. Due to its destructive power and resulting extensive area damage, rock burst is among the most critical threats to coal mine safety. It results from the combined action of the coal and the rock when affected by the mining process. To this end, we used a combination of coal and rock to conduct our studies. Combining a uniaxial compression experiment with theoretical analysis, this work investigated how different lithologies and coal–rock height ratios affect the mechanical properties of this combination and the law governing energy accumulation. We determined the following: When the coal–rock height ratios are dissimilar, the peak strength and modulus of elasticity of the combination show a negative correlation with the coal thickness share, and the pre-peak energy accumulation and impact energy index of the combination is positively correlated with the coal thickness percentage. In combination with the same coal–rock height ratio, the peak strength, elastic modulus, pre-peak energy accumulation, and impact energy index all increase with increased rock strength and elastic modulus. The presence of a hard rock layer affects the accumulation of pre-peak energy. Based on the experimental analysis, a theoretical model was established, and the surrounding rock stress negatively correlates with the percentage of coal thickness; the energy stored in the surrounding rock is directly proportional to the coal in the zone. Therefore, we inferred that the stress distribution of the surrounding rock as coal thickness changes is abnormal; substantial energy accumulation can swiftly initiate dynamic disasters, such as rock bursts. This study has important reference significance for preventing and controlling rock bursts in areas where coal thickness changes.

Humanity development is associated with higher spiritual and social behaviour and financial shape, which is an undeniable factor of urbanisation. Previously, in areas of georesource concentration, cities and settlements were formed with people exploiting these georesources. However, imperfect technologies lead to rapid depletion of reserves and industrial and environmental disasters, which affect the vulnerability of cities and the people living in them. The analysis of applied technologies has demonstrated that potash extraction is accompanied by a low recovery ratio, high mine accidents, and environmental problems. The principles of sustainable development of geo-resources for the creation of mining technologies that ensure industrial safety, environmental sustainability, and extending the life of the mining enterprise to save working places will reduce the vulnerability of cities. This article proposes the use of the room-and-pillar mining method with the replacement of natural supports with artificial ones. Three-stage stoping with backfill is considered. Numerical modelling has shown stabilisation of mining and geomechanical processes, which confirms the prospectivity of the method with backfill. For these purposes, this research presents a new backfill composition based on local industrial waste. Schemes of backfill preparation and feeding into the mined-out space are proposed. The proposed technology, based on the principles of sustainable development of georesources, is the foundation for an economically profitable, environmentally friendly, and socially responsible mining enterprise. The implementation of the principles of sustainable development of georesources will allow for the preservation of cities and reduce their vulnerability.
