Las secuencias mesozoicas de lechos rojos y sal representan el basamento economico de las subcuencas petroleras mexicanas del Golfo de Mexico, asf como el inicio de Ia transgresion marina tethisiana que formo los sistemas petroleras. Los analisis palinoestratigraficos (1969-1993) de estas secuencias permitieron obtener datos lito-, bio- y cronoestratigraficos del Alogrupo Los San Pedros y del Grupo Huayacocotla (edad Raetho-Liasica en Ia Cuenca Huayacocotla-El Alamar), de las formaciones del Jurasico Medio La Joya (subcuenca Chihuahua-Sabinas-Burgos), Rosario, Cahuasas (Subcuenca Tampico-Misantla) y Todos Santos (subcuencas de Veracruz y Sureste). Estos datos y los obtenidos del "caprock" del Challenger KnollJ:lelGolfo de Mexico, por Kirkland y Gerhardt, han permitido entender el origen y Ia evolucion tectonica del Golfo de Mexico. De estos datos se deduce la existencia de una discordancia entre las rocas metamorficas e fgneas del basamento y los lechos rojos del Jurasico Medio en las subcuencas del Golfo de Mexico y que se continua sobre las rocas fluvio-lacustres-marinas liasicas de las cuencas de Huayacocotla El Alamm:, Tlaxiaco y Huamuxtitlan. El modelo tect6nico de la Union Triple incluye tres periodos: (1) la formaci on de la Cuenca Rhaeto-liasica Huayacocotla-El Alamar, (2) el origen de la subcuenca Tampico-Misantla durante el Liasico Tardfo y (3) el origen del Golfo de Mexico y de sus subcuencas de Chihuahua-Sabinas, Veracruz y Sureste, durante el Jurasico Medio Temprano. Esta Triple Union permitio el desplazarniento hacia el NW del Bloque Texas-Luisiana y de Ia parte occidental de Mexico por medio de las megacizallas Vancouver-Bahamas, Texas-Sabinas y Pico de Orizaba-Laguna Inferior, al permanecerunido el Bloque Chiapas Yucatan a Suramerica. Este modelo y los datos geoqufmicos permiten delimitar nuevas provincias potencialmente productoras de gas y petroleo hacia el centro del Golfo de Mexico. Se trata de las rampas de las subcuencas de Chihuahua-Sabinas-Burgos, Tampico-Misantla y Sureste, ya que estuvieron muy proximas a Ia union triple durante Ia subsidencia de sus bordes y fueron las primeras en recibir las aguas oceanicas tethisianas, donde el fitoplancton marino se desarrollo en condiciones ffsico-qufmicas ideales. Ademas, sus rocas ricas en materia organic a fueron las primeras en alcanzar la temperatura de generacion de petrol eo y gas y estos los primeros en migrar hacia las partes altas de las rampas.doi: sin doi

We present quantitative plausibility studies of potential formation mechanisms for the “honeycomb” terrain on the northwestern Hellas basin floor. The honeycomb terrain is a unique landscape of ~10.5 × 5 km wide, mostly cell‐shaped depressions that are arranged in a regular, dense pattern covering ~36,000 km2. We argue against the honeycombs being (peri)glacial landforms (till rings, iceberg imprints, and thermokarst) or the result of igneous diapirism, as terrestrial analogs do not reproduce their key characteristics. Fossilized impact melt convection cells also appear to be an unsuitable interpretation, as melt solidification should not permit such structures to be retained. We present arguments in favor of salt or ice diapirism as honeycomb formation models. Honeycomb‐sized diapirs could be formed by a ~2 km thick salt layer (~72,000 km3 for the entire honeycomb terrain), which might have been derived from the highlands north of Hellas Planitia—an area of abundant chloride signatures and intense snowfall according to ancient Mars climate models. Nearby volcanic activity ~3.8 Ga ago potentially enabled recurring phases of (probably salty) meltwater runoff (as indicated by meandering channels) and might therefore have enabled evaporite deposition in the Hellas basin. Being twice as buoyant as salt, water ice would require an only ~1 km thick layer (i.e., ~36,000 km3) to form honeycomb‐sized diapirs, which would be in agreement with a likely ~2 km thick ice stability zone beneath the Hellas basin floor. However, it would remain an open question as to why we find only one such ice diapir landscape on Mars.
