JPWL — an Extension of JPEG 2000 for Wireless Imaging

Abstract: In this paper, we present an overview of the JPWL standardization activity. JPWL is an extension of JPEG 2000 for the efficient transmission of JPEG 2000 images over an error-prone wireless network. More specifically, JPWL supports a set of tools for error protection and correction, including Forward Error Correcting codes (FEC), Unequal Error Protection (UEP), data partitioning and interleaving.

“…In Part 11 of the JPEG 2000 standard, wireless JPEG 2000 (JPWL) [54] defines techniques to increase the error resilience when transmitting codestreams over wireless network. JPWL specifies the tools such as forward error correction (FEC), interleaving and unequal error protection (UEP).…”

“…The analysis on the basis of network error simulations with a bit error rate in the range of 10 −2 to 10 −4 [14,15,20] is too coarse grain to show the subtle differences between the error concealment strategies. Commonly, errors occur The results of figures 7 and 8 show the averaged results for a test set of 100 images with a resolution of 512 times 288 each compressed with JJ2000 default parameters and a bitrate of 2bpp.…”

“…The interleaving prevents from loosing important chunks of the bitstream at the same position but rather bursts the errors over the whole bitstream. The interleaving technique [13] is depicted in Fig. 10, where each ith word of the interleaved bitstream is constructed from the ith byte of each word from the original bitstream.…”

“…In error-prone conditions, the introduced schemes for image coding are compared to scalable JPEG2000. In this case, the different parts of the JPEG2000 stream are interleaved [13] and then protected with Reed Solomon (RS) [14] codes. Moreover, the error resilience tools of JPEG2000 are switched on to enable the recovery from errors present in the stream.…”
